Once you have your shiny new cabinet doors in place, it can really look like a brand new kitchen! However, the lustre won’t last for long if you don’t care for your doors properly. While maintenance may not be on the top of your list of activities (and we don’t blame you!), there are a few simple steps you can take to keep your cabinet doors looking their best. Let’s take a look!

Keep it simple

Your cabinet doors don’t need much to keep them clean! Rather than spending money on expensive cleaning products, all you need to do is use warm, soapy water with a soft cloth or sponge to keep your cabinets looking good. Give your cabinet doors a clean every week, followed by a quick wipe over with a clean, dry cloth. Just remember to wipe up any food spill as soon as they happen to avoid staining.

Put away abrasive products

There are so many abrasive products available on the market and, although they are definitely efficient at cleaning, they’re just too harsh for most cabinet doors. Steel wool, magic erasers, abrasive cream cleaners and bleach based products can all cause irreparable damage to the finish of your cabinets and it can result in micro-scratches, or the finish coming off. Even if you get a stain on your cabinet door, be careful because abrasive cleaners can make it look worse.

Avoid moisture

When it comes to your cabinet doors, it’s important that you keep them free of moisture to avoid damage to the wood over time. If there are any spills on your cabinets, simply wipe them up straight away – this includes spills on the benchtops to prevent liquid from dripping down onto your cabinet doors. Pay special attention to moisture around the sink and dishwasher areas where water can easily make its way onto the cabinets. Remember to also avoid hanging wet tea towels over your cabinet doors to dry as the moisture can cause issues.

Impact of sunlight

With most cabinet doors, it’s important to remember that if they’re exposed to direct sunlight, they’ll fade over time. With that in mind, if your doors have a lot of strong sunlight on them, it may be worth investing in simple curtains or blinds so they don’t fade as quickly.
